How it works

Where the numbers come from

The calculator starts from typical installed prices per square foot for each material on a low deck, based on 2025–2026 pricing from Lower Mainland and Fraser Valley builders. Height adds a percentage for posts, beams, bracing and guards. Railings are priced per foot, assuming railing on three sides. Stairs, covers, tear-out, engineering and permits are added as ranges.

Finally it adjusts for your town's typical price level: Vancouver and the North Shore usually run higher, and the Fraser Valley lower. Prices are before GST.

What it can't see

Why real quotes differ

Soil and footings, access to the yard, the exact product line, the shape of the deck, how it meets the house and what's hiding under an old deck all move the price. So does how busy builders are: spring is peak season.

That's why it's worth getting a few quotes from builders who've seen the site. Why compare quotes →

Questions

Deck cost questions

How accurate is the deck cost calculator?

It gives a budget range based on typical installed prices across the Lower Mainland, adjusted for your town. Real quotes depend on your soil, access, the exact product and what a builder finds on site.

Does the price include GST?

No. The ranges are before 5% GST, which is normally added to quotes.

Why does height add so much?

Raised and second-storey decks need taller posts, bigger beams, bracing, guards, often a full set of stairs and engineering. Those parts can cost more than the decking itself.

What's the cheapest way to build a deck?

A simple rectangle, low to the ground, in pressure-treated wood, with short stairs and an aluminum railing only where it's needed. Avoiding a second-storey height or a roof keeps costs down most.
