Deck builders in the Lower Mainland
A new deck is one of the best-used rooms of a Lower Mainland home, as long as it's built for the rain. Tell us the size, height and material you have in mind and we'll send your project to up to three vetted local deck builders who'll quote it.
- Typical cost $35–100+ per sq ft
- Time on site 1–3 weeks
- Permit often needed
Local conditions
Built for months of rain
Most decks here don't fail because of the boards. They fail at the hidden parts: footings sitting in wet clay, a ledger board against the house without proper flashing, and joists that stay damp under the decking all winter.
A good builder plans for that from the start: footings or helical piles that suit your soil, flashing at the house, tape on the tops of the joists, and boards spaced to drain and dry. These details barely show on a quote, but they decide whether a deck lasts 10 years or 30.
What a good quote includes
- Deck size, height and a layout drawing
- Footing type and depth (concrete or helical piles)
- Frame lumber size and joist spacing
- Ledger attachment and flashing at the house
- Joist tape or other frame protection
- Decking product, line and colour
- Railing system and stairs
- Permit, drawings and engineering if needed
- Removal of any old deck
- Cleanup and disposal
- Written warranty and payment schedule

Questions
New decks questions
How long does it take to build a deck?
Most decks take one to three weeks on site once materials and any permit are in place. The permit itself can take several weeks, so plan ahead for spring builds.
Is composite worth the extra cost?
Often, over the life of the deck. Composite costs more upfront but skips the staining wood needs every few years in our climate. Over 10 to 15 years the gap narrows a lot.
Can a deck be built in winter?
Framing and footings can go in during drier spells, but rain slows work and some finishes need dry weather. Many people use winter to get quotes and permits, then build in spring.
